Biography

Dr. Werner Scheithauer was a distinguished professor of Internal Medicine at the Medical University of Vienna, renowned for his pioneering contributions to gastrointestinal oncology. His medical journey began with a focus on gastroenterology, during which he developed a particular interest in gastrointestinal cancers. This passion led him to undertake an extended research fellowship in the laboratory of Dr. Daniel Von Hoff in San Antonio, Texas, a leading figure in oncology research.

Upon returning to Vienna, Dr. Scheithauer dedicated himself to clinical research in gastrointestinal oncology. In the early 1990s, he conducted a groundbreaking randomized study demonstrating the positive effects of systemic chemotherapy compared to best supportive care in metastatic colon carcinoma, earning international recognition for his work. His research was characterized by extensive national and international collaboration, resulting in approximately 300 publications in high-impact journals. He was also appointed to international consensus panels focusing on colon and pancreatic cancer.

Dr. Scheithauer's academic interests encompassed advanced gastroenterology, radioisotope applications, abdominal sonography, medical statistics, clinical oncology, cancer therapy drug development, and tissue culture in oncology.

Beyond his research, Dr. Scheithauer served as a senior physician and later as the program director for gastrointestinal oncology at the Department of Oncology at the Vienna General Hospital (AKH). He was known for his straightforwardness and dedication to efficiency, both in his professional and personal life. Health challenges led to his early retirement from research and clinical duties, and he spent his final years in private life. Dr. Scheithauer passed away in November 2024, leaving a lasting legacy in the field of oncology.
